For some people, their car is a crucial part of their life. It allows people to get to their job or visit loved ones. In order to safely get from one place to another, tires are necessary. Just like any part of the car, wear and tear on the tires is inevitable. Once the tires have reached the end of their life, it’s time for a new set.
There are a variety of signs that your tires need to be replaced but being able to identify them is key to keeping your car safe. Whether you’re unsure when they were replaced last or you’re a daily driver, look over your tires to determine if they're past the date of expiration. Check out the following section to see some of the signs of wear and tear on tires.
Bulges, Gouges, or Cracks
When a tire deflates, it bulges at the sides. Even once it’s re-inflated, gouges or cracks may appear. They also could be the reason it’s not holding air. Anything on the tire that appears odd and concerning should be checked out by a vehicle maintenance specialist.
Tread Wear
A great way to determine if it’s time for new tires is to perform the penny test to see how worn the treads are. Start by placing a penny (with Lincoln’s head pointing down) into the tread. If you’re able to still see the top of his head, the treads are too worn. This means it's time for a set of new tires.
Tire Pressure
It’s important to regularly check your tire pressure to ensure there aren’t any holes or other issues with the tires. Tires tend to deflate at a rate of about one pound per square inch (PSI) per month. Having low tire pressure might mean your tires are past their prime.
Temperature Changes
During the colder months, tire pressure tends to drop. This is why it’s important to keep an eye on your tire’s PSI. In the warmer months, tires can develop an excessive amount of heat. Driving on tires that aren’t properly inflated will generate more heat, which causes them to wear faster.
Vibration
Any type of vibration while you're driving is a red flag. If you’re feeling vibration under the seats, the tires may be out of balance or defective. Vibration in the steering wheel is a sign of suspension issues. No matter where it’s coming from, a vehicle maintenance specialist will find the root of the issue.
